Bluegrass Masters Weekend - Valerie Smith & Liberty Pike

From Nov. 2 to 4, the North Shore Music Association hosts its 28th Annual Bluegrass Masters Weekend at Lutsen Resort: three days of small-group jamming around the lodge, a day of workshops, and a concert by bluegrass vocalist Valerie Smith and her band Liberty Pike. Workshop topics include: vocal range, tone, and technique; bluegrass and harmony singing; song phrasing and selection; songwriting and arranging ($8/hr. or $40/full day). On Nov. 3 at 8 pm, Valerie and Liberty Pike perform in concert, open to the public ($20 adults/$10 kids).

Valerie Smith, a certified music educator specializing in voice and performance, has taught students of all ages for twenty years. Her performing career in Nashville got started under the mentorship of Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Louvin and the Nashville Bluegrass Band’s Alan O’Bryant. Valerie and her band Liberty Pike have rocked the bluegrass world for almost two decades, traveling the country and the globe, and receiving Grammy, IBMA, and Dove Award nominations for their recordings.

Robert Jones & Matt Watroba: Common Chords
10/12/2018: 7 PM@ Arrowhead Center for the Arts
Detroit duo Robert Jones & Matt Watroba present their Common Chords program "Music That Matters," celebrating cultural and racial diversity and cooperation. Through folk, blues, spirituals, work songs, and chants, they illustrate how American roots music is rich, diverse, direct, and powerful music that reflects history, social change, migration, hopes and dreams. Woven together, these diverse traditional styles create the fabric of the great American musical tapestry.
